COL Rod Jones is a 3rd-generation dentist and 2nd-generation Army Dental Corps Officer. He is currently Commander of Ft. Carson’s U.S. Army Dental Health Activity and Dean of their Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry (AEGD)/1-Year. In 1993 he received his DMD degree from Oregon Health Sciences U. in Portland, OR. Immediately following dental school, COL Jones entered active duty and successfully completed the AEGD/1-Year program at the Ft. Benning Dental Activity (DENTAC).
Ft. Polk DENTAC was COL Jones’ initial assignment as a Staff Dental Officer. While there, from 1994-1997, he also served a one year tour of duty as the Regimental Dental Surgeon for the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. COL Jones was then stationed at the Ft. Richardson Dental Clinic Command (DCC), where he served as Troop Commander and General Dentist from 1997-2000. Following his tour of duty in Alaska, COL Jones completed a 2-year residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the U. of Louisville. While there, he also earned an MS degree in Oral Biology.
His first assignment following orthodontic residency training was at Stuttgart DCC, where he served as Chief, Orthodontics from 2002-2004. From Germany, he was hand-picked to attended Resident Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, where he was also chosen to be a Section Leader. Upon CGSC graduation, he was then assigned a return tour to the Ft. Benning DENTAC, from 2005-2008, where he dually served as AEGD/1-Year residency faculty and Chief, Orthodontics. While there, he also opened and staffed a remote orthodontic practice at Ft. Rucker DCC.
From 2008-2010, COL Jones attended the Army-Baylor U. Healthcare Administration program, where he earned dual Masters degrees (MBA/MHA). While at Baylor, he was selected by the faculty to be Class Leader and was ultimately awarded the prestigious Peter T. Shaul Memorial Peer Award. At graduation, he was inducted into Upsilon Phi Delta’s Health Administration National Honor Society. In 2010, COL Jones completed his Army-Baylor internship year at the US Army Dental Command (DENCOM). Immediately prior to his arrival at Ft. Carson, COL Jones served for over 6 years as the only Director of Operations for Southern Regional Dental Command, Ft. Gordon, GA, prior to its closure.
COL Jones has published multiple peer-reviewed dental articles and presented clinical cases at national and international dental meetings. He has served on numerous strategic-level boards, including multi-$B DoD procurement actions. COL Jones was named the very first recipient of the Dental Corps Chief’s Senior Officer Exceptional Service and Leadership Award and he also holds membership in the Order of Military Medical Merit. COL Jones is a Fellow of both the International College of Dentistry and Academy of General Dentistry. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
