The program has started for 2011! All slots are now closed. Please call for future dates/times. AR 600-63, Army Health Promotion, establishes the authority for the implementation of wellness programs. The following guidelines are provided to clarify civilian employees use of duty time to attend health promotion programs: (1) Supervisors may approve up to 3 hours of excused absence per week to allow employees to participate in command sponsored, formal physical exercise training. The exercise sessions should be taken in conjunction with beginning or ending of the work day, or with a break to facilitate a satisfactory workout. The specific hours will be mutually decided between employee and supervisor. This training will include participant evaluation both pre- and post program, continuous monitoring during enrollment in the program, and exercise, nutrition, mental health and wellness education. These activities must be an integral part of a total fitness program and are time limited to six months in duration. (2) The employee must complete appropriate documentation to include: MOU for civilian supervisor's approval, MOU for civilian participant, informed consent, and physician's release for enrollment into the wellness program. A maximum for 150 participants may enroll in each cycle. Directorates will be provided allocations for each class cycle. Class cycles will begin every 6 months. (3) Participants must attend one 2 hour session at the beginning and of program. The 2 hour session will include various fitness and health assessments. To ensure commitment on the civilian participants' part, they are expected to attend a lunch and learn one hour per month, usually held on Fridays from 1200-1300 hours. (4) While formal physical fitness programs may be repeated from time to time, employees will not normally be granted excused absence for physical exercise training more than once every five years. This grant does not apply to other training or professional development. (5) Beyond these situations, work schedules should be adjusted to permit training and exercise where possible and be consistent with workload and mission.
