Anesthesia services are provides
by 1-4 board certified Anesthesiologists and 12-15 Certified Registered
Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). Staff members are Active Duty Military,
Reserves, Civil Service and civilian contract, full and part-time.
Anesthesiologists are physicians who complete a four-year college program, four years of graduate doctoral training and four more years of anesthesiology residency. They apply their knowledge of medicine to fulfill their primary role in the operating room, which is not only to ensure your comfort during surgery, but also to make informed medical judgments to protect you. The role of an anesthesiologist extends beyond the operating room and recovery room. Anesthesiologists work in intensive care units to help restore critically ill patients to stable condition. Anesthesiologists are also involved in pain management, including in our department the diagnosis and treatment of acute problems. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are nurses Advanced Practice Nurses who complete their four-year Bachelors Degree in Nursing, then have at a minimum one to two years of clinical experience in critical care and three more years of anesthesia training resulting in a Master's Degree. CRNAs work primaraly in the operating room and in Labor & Delivery providing labor analgesia. CRNAs are involved in all areas in the peri-operative setting. |
