to get you started. Know someone you’d like to introduce to the information highway?

Recommend this class! No experience is necessary, however, individuals should be able to operate a computer mouse. No registration required. Contact Grant Library for more information.

Introduction to Genealogy

If you’ve been thinking about tracing your roots, come join this small group, led by one

Weekly Storytime at the Library

Grant Library’s Weekly Storytime is simply the most entertaining ongoing program

at Fort Carson! Storytime helps foster an early love of books and reading. It also  encourages developmental skills and positive social interaction with other children, and it gives parents and grandparents a chance to share ideas and news. Stories, puppets, music,

games, and craft activities are all part of the fun. No registration required. Contact

Grant Library for more information.

The most spectacular library event of the year, Grant Library’s six-week summer reading program, “Paws, Claws, Scales & Tales” includes stories galore, reading challenges, special guests, crafts, games, puppet shows, music, songs, and more! The program is designed for schoolage children, ages 5 and up. Contact Grant Library for more information.

Snuggle-up Storytime

Children ages 3 and older and their caregiver are invited to this special evening storytime. Kids may wear pajamas and bring their favorite cuddly.  The program includes stories,

songs, and videos. It’s designed to promote literacy and a love of books while providing small group interaction and safe, fun, and educational evening entertainment for the whole family. Refreshments will be served. No registration is required. Contact Grant Library for more information.

Fort Carson’s Alpine Tower Challenge Course/Ropes Course

What is a Challenge Course/Ropes Course?

Fort Carson’s Challenge Course isn’t a traditional climbing wall or a rappel tower. Although climbing often is an aspect of challenge courses, many of the goals and objectives of a challenge course can be accomplished on the ground.  Initially, Ropes Courses were designed to train youth for military service, but the scope has grown considerably over the years. The main goal of Fort Carson’s Challenge Course

is to foster group cohesion, problem solving skills, and teamwork. The term “Ropes

Course” often misleads participants into thinking that the course is purely a physical activity. There are as many mental challenges as physical challenges during this program. Groups are placed in unusual scenarios and are challenged to interact as a cohesive unit to solve the tasks presented to them. These types of group activities, called initiatives, sometimes involve ropes or other equipment as props, while other times they may involve only the participants.  Since the Challenge Course is such a dynamic learning tool, specific group goals can be addressed during a session. Challenge courses employ experiential learning, which simply means “learning by doing” or “hands on learning.”

“I hear, I forget.

I see, and I remember.

I do, and I understand.” —Chinese Proverb

What is the Fort Carson Army Substance Abuse Program (ASAP)?

The Army Substance Abuse Program at Fort Carson (ASAP FC) is a commander’s fitness, retention, and readiness program (IAW AR 600-85) designed to:

• Support Commanders in the implementation of their unit prevention program (including drug and alcohol deterrence) through proactive risk reduction planning.

• Educate and train Soldiers, family members, DA Civilians, and the local community about drugs and alcohol; the potential impact/consequences of substance abuse to Army and unit readiness; effects on the Soldier’s health and career; and on relationships with subordinates, family, and friends.

• Deter substance abuse through aggressive Soldier and civilian urinalysis testing programs.

• Identify soldiers with substance abuse problems as early as possible.

• Return to full duty those soldiers, identified as having substance abuse problems, who   demonstrate the ability to be substance-free, and have the potential for continued military  service.  ASAP is divided into two major installation components: the clinical (ASAP- Clinic) and non-clinical (DMWR ASAPFC or Command ASAP).

ASAP-FC PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

• The proponent for the Command ASAP is the Army Center for Substance Abuse
